Is aerosol Brake and Parts Cleaner like what you can buy at WalMart good for cleaning raw metal before priming? There is no rust on the metal.

Thanks!

Phil- Not all brake cleaners are the same. What you buy at Wal Mart probably is a petroleum based product and therefore not good for cleaning before painting. I use a brake cleaner made by Wurth (Ramsey NJ. Tel: 800-526-5228). This stuff is so good that I actually buy it by the case. It's really only Hexane and Isopropyl Alcohol. Works great on everything from cleaning really nasty parts to removing stains from clothes. I spray everything with it before painting.

No. That is probably a petroleum based product. In fact you need to remove the residue left by these products before you paint or you won't get good adhesion. I don't know what you mean by "clean". To remove oil residue, etc, go to an automotive paint supplier and ask for a wax and grease remover. An example is PPG DX330. Or if it is metal you have sanded and is ready for paint you need to use a phosphoric type product such as metalprep, or a similar compound to neutralize trace rust that you can't see. An excellent product that you can apply and paint over is called Rass o Nil -- believe the current name is Picklex 20 -- www.autobodystore.com. Expensive, $30 a pint, but a pint will do a whole tractor, just brush it on. It is not supposed to be washed off like metal prep. Since you don't have rust, most other rust converters won't work, since they need rust to work properly.
