Hi Paint Guys,

I'm painting my Allis C with PPG OMNI AE. I had it torn down to single pieces to restore it and as I got one piece finished, I used a self etching primer until I could get it finished. Now it's about 95% together and I'd like to know if I should use a two part epoxy primer next. I know nothing about paint so thanks for the info in advance.

Hi Jeff,

I am not a particular fan of self-etching primers so I don't have personal experience with them. If you used the OMNI MP176 self-etching primer, the tech sheet for OMNI MP170 epoxy indicates it as a compatible overcoat. For other self-etchers, unknown. I would expect that most epoxies are pretty much universal and could be used without problems but there is no guarantee. The tech sheet for OMNI MAE recommends AGAINST direct application to MP176, if that is what you used, for optimum properties. Therefore, I would suggest some type of primer or sealer before the MAE, preferably an OMNI product to assure compatibility. If you use an epoxy, be sure to get the tech sheet and observe the time windows for topcoating with the MAE. The tech sheets for all OMNI products are available here.
