Hey Guys,

Had a bad rust area cut & removed from my tractors hood, right in the circle where the exhuast pipe exits...had a welder cut some sheet metal form a half circle and weld/grind and somewhat smoothe the area out...Obviously it is time for finishing work. If I used bondo to refinsh this area, can bondo take the heat from the exhaust pipe without later cracking/breaking/causing the paint to peel? If there is a solution, I would appreciate your help on the process and any products. Thank you very much!! tom

I've heard on one of these forums (can't remember exactly which one?) of a product called "thermasteel". It is available at NAPA auto parts, goes on like bondo, takes lots of heat and is supposed to be machineable. You may want to check that out....

Yes, bondo will bubble and blister when lots of heat is present. Bondo can be places around mufflers and exhaust pipes, but it all depends on how close the pipe will be to the patched area. If you are using the tractor striktly for parades and joy riding then you can get by with more(bondo closer to the pipe). But if you are going to use the tractor then I would not have any bondo any closer than 2-3 inches from the muffler. But in the other case I'd say you could put it as close as 1/2-1 inch from the muffler. I repaired a cut hood on a 1952 JD A, and it was 1/4 inch from the muffler. But I only use it for parades.
