Cracks must be welded, then ground smooth. If you can use a reinforcement to prevent further cracking, do it. Nicks... If you mean small dents, they can be filled, or hammer and dolly techniques can be used to remove them. Pits, if that's what you mean by nicks, usually are sandblasted, primed and filled with a primer surfacer or a glazing putty.

Sounds like you need to pick up a book on basic bodywork. There are lots of good textbooks out there. Try the local public library first. Good luck!
