I have seen adverts for small stand alone HVLP systems It icludes gun hoses and small compressor. Does anyone have experience of such systems. When I use my conventional system I have problems with spray dust coating everything in my shop. The HVLP system is said to eliminate this problem.

From what I have heard the cheaper HVLP stand alone units have a hard time getting good results with the modern high solids paints like urethane and polyurethane but if you are using enamels you might get by with one. Personally I think you would be better off buying a good compressor powered HVLP gun and if needed upgrading your air compressor. You will need the compressor for other things so by going this route you will get "more bang for your buck". My Sharpe Platinum HVLP gun leaves very little overspray in the shop.

I have a Campbell Hausfeldt self contained HVLP also. It works pretty good for painting many things, but I also have a Sharpe Cobalt gun that I like a lot better. I have found the right combination of gun, pressure, regulator, epoxy primer, paint, catalyst, and hardner to do what I feel is a very nice job.

I have a friend who's been restoring cars, gas pumps, and U-name-it for years. He bought a self contained turbine HVLP from TIP. They sell sandblasters and other related equipment. He swears by this unit, and has hung all his air units close to the ceiling of his shop. He told me he hasn't used any of them at all since buying his unit. I like the idea of one of those because you only need 110 volt and it is self contained. No compressor to worry about, and it is very portable. I would like to hear more about that Cambell-Hausfield unit and which one it is.

I don't think any of Campbell Hausfield's equipment can compare to TIP tools equipment. You get what you pay for. Never heard anything bad about TIP. However, their self-contained units are expensive. It is probably better for the occasional painter to purchase a good HVLP gun that matches his compressor. I do have one of Campbell Hausfields better air compressors (17 SCFM at 100psi), but I am not subjecting it to continuous duty, because I don't think it would last very long.

Why don't you just get an HVLP gun and use your existing compressor?

I have one of these from Campbell-Hausfield and it works pretty good. The air unit works more like a vaccum cleaner unit than a compressor. You do get a lot less overspray but it won't eliminate it enough that you can paint a tractor in your work shop and not get overspray on everything else. I thinks it's suppose to be like 1/2 of the overspray of a conventional unit or something like that. I really like mine but I still have to cover everything up.
