I am thinking about buying the Platinum LV spray gun and would like some guidance as to which tip and cap combination I should get. I will be using Nason etch primer, primer-surfacer and single stage urethane. Is there one combination that will be suitable for use with all of these? I'm open to any and all opinions. Thanks.

General rule of thumb says to use a large fluid tip for primer and a smaller for base and clear coats.
You do as you wish, but for primers I would go to Harbor Freight and get their gravity fed HVLP to spray primer with. If you get 2 of them you can keep self-etching primer mixed in one at all times. The other should be used for primer, just primer and only primer to prevent cross contanimation. I have 3 different guns from HF and have not had any problems with them.

I would NOT use them for the top coats however. Save your Sharpe for the top coats where quality of finish really counts. You will be glad you did.

I don't know the difference between the 2000 and 3000 aircaps. I just bought a Platinum, matter of fact I am awaiting delivery. I got mine of ebay for $223 with shipping. It's new in the box with the aluminum and nylon cup, wrench, regulator, and brush. I don't know if it has the 2000 or 3000 air cap. The only problem is mine has a 1.1 tip. I have to buy a 1.3. I don't know how or where you are planning on buying yours but here is a little piece of advice. CNKS says you can get a refurb for roughly $180. I saw some posts on the autobodystore BBS about this and from what I gather you only get one cup and one tip without the regulator, wrench, etc. This stuff can add up unless you already own a Sharpe gun. The autobodystore site has them for roughly $298 with everything. There is some price discrepancy so you have to go to the checkout to see the real price. Somewhere else you may want to look is spraygunworld.com. Don't get confused if you end up at Toolparadise.com, they're the same. I've done a lot of research and they are the cheapest I could find. I picked up my DeVilbiss Finishline II there for $126 with shipping. They have new Sharpe Cobalts there for $109. In short, the autobodystore is a wonderful site. Mr. Stewart is very interactive with the members and there is a lot of knowledge there, however there are cheaper places to buy your guns.

I have the 3000 air cap and the 1.3 tip in mine and it has worked fine with primer surfacer and single stage urethane. The 1.5 tip would be a little faster but the 1.3 will lay paint down like glass, when spraying paint you can turn your inlet pressure up to 53-55 psi over the recremended 50 and it will really lay the paint down smooth although it will increase the overspray slightly.
