I am restoring a hit & miss gas engine and had to purchase a reproduction rocker arm and mount which was made of brass. Is there a special primer or etching solution needed to make paint stick to brass?

Hi Kevin,

These are the prep chemicals recommended by PPG. I have used the combinations stated for steel and aluminum but not for brass. Odd that for brass, they recommend a steel cleaning chemical and an aluminum conditioning chemical, although at different mix ratios with water. Assuming you are going to paint the brass and not clearcoat it directly, I would recommend a degreasing, then scuffing with 180 or 220 paper, do the chemical preps and then a two part epoxy primer after the conditioning step. That would give you the best adhesion for your topcoat.
