Bubbles in paint

I'm having a problem with what appear to be tiny bubbles appearing in the paint as I apply it. I am using a Sharp Model 75 siphon type gun, 40 - 45 psi, mix the paint per manuf instructions, add fish eye killer, water separator on the wall, disposable water filter on the gun, clean the surface prior to painting with NAPA TecClean, blow surface clean with compressed air..yet I still get these "bubbles", a hundred or more in a square foot. The bubbles are tiny, 0.5 mm in diameter or smaller. The problem occurs with primer or color, enamel or acrylic enamel. What I am missing...doing wrong?

Do you have a high volume fan sucking out the fumes? Sometimes the turbulance caused by this creates small dust particles to imbed themselves in the paint. Also make sure you have no open diesel fumes from fuel containers or the vehicle itself. These will do the same as silicone to the paint, also throw the fisheye eliminator away. Bad stuff. We use PPG products and am not sure but think fisheye eliminator went out with stoneage. Good luck.

Hi Mike,

I agree with the others. I have not used it but I notice that the TecClean is a fast evaporating cleaner. Make sure you follow the instructions about keeping it wet and wiping it off with different clean cloths. Since it is fast you will not be able to clean large areas at once...break it up into small ones. Any blowing off with compressed air is best done PRIOR to such cleaning and then a final wipe with a tack rag just before painting as CNKS indicates.

A description by DuPont of the causes of bubbling is presented here. I have never used any fisheye preventer. I have always considered the stuff to be a poor substitute for proper cleaning in the first place. But that's only my opinion :o).

Try just spraying air through your gun, say against a clean piece of glass. If there is any indication of water or other contamination then that is where you should concentrate your attention.

I would not use fish eye killer in the primer.
Check labels and make sure there is no silcone
in primer or TecClean. It does sound like a water
problem as stated below. Also check the solvent
dry speed. If it is an overly fast thinner the
finish will have trapped solvent which could be
the cause of bubbles. Make sure you allow proper
dry time between coatings.

Not sure but it sounds like water to me. You need a good water separator, not the Wal-Mart kind (not saying you have one!) mounted as far away from your compressor as possible, mine is about 90 feet. I don't use fisheye killer because I've heard it causes more problems than it solves, although I do get some minor stuff that could be fisheyes. I'm also not familiar with your NAPA product, I use PPG DX 330, and wipe it off with clean rags. I don't think I would use compressed air immediately prior to painting. Too much of a chance of dust settling back on the paint. Use a tack rag. Lets see what someone else says.
