I picked up a used plastic bumper for my sons 1991 Mazda Protege and I need to paint it before I put it on. The used bumper is painted a light tan and I need to paint it a candy apple red. I know there is a process to prep the bumper to get paint to adhere to it. Can anyone give me some pointers or products that would make the job easier? If you want to email me remove the nospam- from my email address.
Thanks,
Stan

Wash with soap and water.Front AND back....
Wash with solvent( Cheap reducer or whatever..)
Sand with appropriate grit for topcoat used.( Ask where u buy your paint.)Probably 280- 400 grit. Sand until there are no shiny spots. If the paint on bumper is factory paint you do not want to cut thru it. If it is a repaint already you might want another bumper cover, as you will probably need to strip the repaint to have a durable job.
Rewash. Dry thoroughly.
Spray with adhesion promoter
If adhesion promoter is not opaque, spray with sealer that is.
Spray topcoat.. If topcoat is basecoat/clearcoat, spray basecoat, then clearcoat. Sealer to final clear should all have flex additive in them or be paint specifically for plastic bumpers.

Double check with your paint supplier for current procedure and materials for your car. These are from memory when I was into automotive painting in the early 90's. If there is damage you need to use fillers on, you will need special fillers and putties designed for urethane bumpers.
Good luck.. Truck
