finally painted my super m with por15 primer and hardnose international red paint - two part.
I primed with a conventional suction gun at 30lbs and laid the por15 primer on great - no problems.
I then used the proper int.red hardnose two-part mixture and used the finer 1.5sharpplatinum at 10lbs of pressure and all it did was splatter the paint on. I then upt my pressure to about 22lbs and got the best spray pattern and coverage. No matter how fast or slow I went - it orange peeled. any ideas as to what I could do better?

The tractor looks great from 5 feet away - but once I get up close I can see little orange peel on the tin. It is a work tractor and within a year will be all grimmy - still looks 1000% better than before, but I want to correct the problem. Thanks for your input - Joe

Sounds like your paint was drying too fast. Insufficent reducer,(paint too thick) metal temperature was too high, (paint had the reducer forced out too soon) or the paint went on too slowly (not enough presure at the gun). Most likely a combination of 2 or more of these.

Yup, your pressure is less half what it should be.

Orange peel is the result of an applied coat of paint (basecoat, clearcoat, or both) that doesn't flow out or level fully. Keeping in mind that paint is basically applied as a liquified plastic, the cause of peel is that the paint either doesn't stay liquid long enough to completely flow or the material is to viscous to allow it to flow out. In either case, the paint ceases to flow before the surface is completely level.

Did you have the pressure regulator that attaches to the gun set at 10 psi? The 10 psi number is for the air cap which requires a special guage to measure but if your inlet guage on the gun is set at 50 psi with the trigger pulled it will have 10 psi at the air cap. If you set the inlet guage at 50 psi it will lay the paint down very smooth.
