Hi, Working on my first restoration ('46 JD B hand start). I just bought HVLP sprayer to do the finish coats. I'm working on small pieces right now and also about to put a new core in the radiator. As I clean up and bead blast I want to put a coat of primer on to stop any rust. Since most evenings I only get an hour or two to work on the parts, I was hoping I could use a spray can primer. Is this practicle, and if so what would you suggest for primer? Thanks, Jim

Jim,
For priming bare metal, I would recommend NAPA Econo Etch primer. Most body shops in my area use it, and I use it on all the bare metal that I prime when I restore tractors for my customers. It actually etches into the bare metal, which provides superior rust protection and it's very easy to sand once it has dried. You can apply red oxide on top of that to fill in rust pits, etc. The Etching primer is a 2 part primer that you mix and have to spray with your gun. I think the pot life is 7 days, though, so you can just clean up your gun tip and leave the stuff in the pot for days. Check with NAPA to make sure on that, but I think that's true. I use a lot of the stuff, and always use it all up before I'm done, so I don't usually let it sit in the gun for more than a few hours. Anyway, that's my product of choice and I think once you use it you will agree that it's fantastic.

JD primer is excellent and is available in both spray cans and quarts from John Deere dealers.
