How does a gravity feed gun do at painting a tractor? Seems like it would be trouble trying to paint underneath.....can you tip them back or sideways. I want to purchase one and I'm trying to decide which type would work the best.

As the others have said usually you can just angle the gun but you want to do it while it still has quite a bit of paint in it. Usually nobody looks at the underside of a tractor so it doesn't have to be perfect. I have the DeVilbiss bag inserts for my Sharpe gravity feed gun and they work great for overhead painting but I don't use them much because they reduce the amount of paint the gun holds and usually I don't need them.

Hi kman,

You can tip them back quite a bit but if you go too far you can get dripping from the cup or lose paint supply to the tip...both have happened to me and I hate it when that happens :o). As CNKS says, you can angle the gun to get at the undersides, however it is always best to have the pattern as near to 90 degrees to the surface as possible (in both directions). I also have not tried the baggie arrangement as my only gravity gun is a touch-up gun with a small cup...no commercial baggies available and I have not been successful in trying to adapt something.

The best way to get true all-position spraying, IMO, is to use a pressure fed arrangement with remote cup. It is a real pleasure to use. No weight of paint in the gun hand, usually up to 2 qts sprayable without refill and easy to get at the underside of things while keeping the pattern 90 degrees to the surface. And no worries about dripping out of the cup onto your fresh paint while you paint rims. If you've never tried it, you don't know what you're missing.

You can buy inserts for the cup that will allow you to paint upside down, so they say, I have never tried it, they are sort of like a baggie. I know of one person who makes his own out of plastic Walmart bags. Otherwise, at least on a small tractor, you can angle the gun and cover the underside.
