I had a guy tell me that Dupont paint is one of the best paints to use on tractors. He said that he uses dupont primer and paint. He said some of his tractors that he painted 9 years ago look like they were just painted yesterday. These are red tractors I am talking about. He said they don't fade as bad as if you used IH brand paint. I was just wondering if any of you guys have used or seen tractors that had been painted with Dupont and what you thought of them. Thanks, Adam

Hi Adam,

I will give you my opinion:

It's not the brand but the paint chemistry that counts. DuPont, PPG, Martin Senour (NAPA) and all the other relatively big names in the automotive paint industry have excellent products that perform as well on tractors as luxury cars. They are more expensive (sometimes MUCH more expensive) than the tractor paints used by tractor manufacturers and those supplied as "tractor paints" by low-end paint manufacturers. Your friend is correct about the fading...but that is not because it is DuPont as opposed to IH. I think it likely it is because the IH paint is synthetic enamel and the DuPont your friend uses is an acrylic enamel or even a urethane.

Ask your friend to give you the per gallon price for the DuPont paint he uses and compare that to the per gallon price of the IH paint. You may be surprised at the difference. You want high performance, you have to pay for it third party image.

I forgot to mention that he said it would cost twice as much to prime and paint the tractor but it lasts alot longer.

It will cost more than twice as much. Closer to 3 times. But as with anything along these lines: You get what you pay for.

You can use Nason which is a Dupont product and a very good one at that. Cost is about 2/3 of the regular Dupont line. Color match is excellent as Dupont uses their regular mixing colors to formulate the paints.

FWIW.... Dupont is all I use. I took my Oliver 88 to a show and pull at Adams Tn 2 years ago and I had folks come to me and tell me my puller looked better than the show tractors. Even my fellow pullers complemented me on the good paint job. I even had 2 guys ask me what I would charge to paint their tractors.

There was no doubt I used Dupont paint as I had 2 big Dupont decals on the tractor. I needed something on there until I could get my decals applied.

I've been painting for 25 years, Nason is alright but it fades really fast. dupont single stage is good to but you want to go with any poly or urethane product for longevity.most paint manufacturers have a line of true urethanes. But be sure you have proper safety equipment most really good paints are toxic to spray but if there done right, they will outlast the tractors.

Amen on the toxicity of some paints. It goes without saying that ALL paints should be sprayed while wearing a respirator.

I am sure this is one reason most large metro areas are requiring a paint booth and periodic inspections of paint shops. I am afraid that in a few years the DIY painter is going to be a thing of the past due to EPA regs and local laws.

Jerry What I find in my industry now is that the Paint manu. are being forced to produce much less toxic paints. This is a good thing for both professional and DIY painters. The technology is there, they just have to be forced to develop it.

I agree that safer paint is safer for everyone and everything. But all too often the "safer" paints are not as good as what it replaced. Have you tried spraying the new water bourne paints yet? They are supposed to be the safest thing out there but the longevity is a joke. You spend as much for that paint as you do any other top quality paint and then it breaks down after about 5-6 years. Might as well be spraying laquer.

As with any new technology, it is just going to take time to develope the products to their fullest potential. We have some excellent products to paint with now. I just hope we don't loose them to an inferior product.
