You can use some of the new enviromently friendly paints. most are oil based and take a little time getting used to spraying them. But if you dont have a booth then you have very limited choice of what youy can use.

Use a quality paint manufactured by PPG, Dupont or Sherwin Williams. The best is acrylic urethane (you MUST use hardener), second is acrylic enamel with hardener, third is acrylic enamel without hardener, for those who do not have an air supplied respirator. Twin cartridge respirators do not filter out isocyanates, which can cause respiratory problems and death in some cases. Lacquer paint should not be used, except some primers are called lacquer primers. Preferably you should be to bare metal -- after that opinions differ. I use Rass o Nil (www.autobodystore.com), a phosphoric acid zinc combination, to etch the metal and prevent rust, followed with an epoxy primer, followed by topcoat on the cast. On the sheet metal the epoxy primer is followed by 1+ coats of primer surfacer and sanding before topcoating. Some people prefer a base coat, clear coat system. Use the same brand of paint throughout. If you don't have an air supplied system, use epoxy primer (has to have hardener, but does not contain isos, read the label to be sure), followed by primer surfacer, if needed, followed by unhardened acrylic enamel. Some people prefer etch primer, rather than the Rass o Nil + epoxy primer. I have not used etch primer, I think it has to have another primer over it before topcoating, someone will correct me.
