I'm tearing down the tractor for painting. Which is the best way to remove old paint, rust, etc to ready it for painting. Sand blasting or steam cleaning? I would do the work myself and perhaps rent the equip??? Also, since I can't paint for another week or so, what do I do to KEEP it ready for painting?

Depending on the tractor I start by running to the dollar store and purchasing a couple of cans of cheap oven cleaner(the cheaper the better it works for some reason)I spray it on all greasy and grimmy spots let it sit for a few minutes then pressure wash really good.....then its time for the wire brush for the loose stuff....If you have rust puckering up the paint then sandblast and prime really well. They are lots of good oil residue removers out there like purple power etc...Give it a good hand washing with it then your ready for sanding with fine paper....then prime and paint....spend a little time now and you will have an envyious paint job.....
theres no better feeling than doing the work yourself and in the end having a tractor show quality....
