Confused and/or stupid or both about paint

I have read "posts" till I have a headache, so...I'll just ask a question or 2.

I don't have the proper breathing equipment to use hardeners and I just want to do some painting on 1 tractor, which is a "work" machine.
I want a paint that will hold its color(red)for a several years with out totally fading out...I'd like for it to hold a "little" gloss and not look like "chalk" in a couple years.
From what I have read, acrylic enamel looks like it might be the best choice for me..... ..
How durable is acrylic enamel without hardeners in regard to resistance to spilled gasoline, oil etc? What are it's draw-backs?
I'm assuming that in years past that the paints that were used on Autos didn't have hardeners as are used today and they withstood(and still do) the occasional gas dripped on them.

Cleaning up and removing all the grease, oil etc is a lot of work....I just hate to spend all the time for a paint job that will look like crap in a year, but I also don't want to end up in the emergency room or at a bank taking out a loan to buy a "fresh air system" etc.

And...oh yes...I've tried Central Tractor paint,BPS from TSC and a couple more...and I don't think I need to say more !
I’m thinking Dupont !

Thanks!

Well here is my 2 cents.

The Case IH paint looks good. My cousin has painted quite afew IH and they look as good as any automotive paint when finished.

I don't know about the longevity of it but If you are concerned about it retaining its shine then polish your tractor. I don't know why this seems to be such a strange concept to people but if you wax/polish your tractor once or twice a year then the dirt come off easier and the shine remains. This is especially true of RED which is a soft color.

Gasoline shouldn't be a problem after the paint cures, but that could take two or three months without hardeners, even then you need to be careful. I haven't used Case-IH paint, but have heard good reports. DuPont or PPG will be slightly better, and will cost more. I have seen gasoline stains on repainted cars before hardeners were used. The old enamels, laquers, etc were oven baked, meaning they were more or less cured when they left the factory, not so with a repaint.

I've painted several tractors for others and now have an H Farmall of my own to work on. I've mostly worked on JD and have used Dupont paint with hardener on all of them. I used Dupont because there is a yellow pigment in the JD formula that PPG can't read. A lot of the paints from the dealorships can be catalized with a lot of different hardeners. Check with the paint Jobber. Paint will fade without hardener and gasoline will stain todays paint without hardener. I stress WILL! My sugggestion to you is to have a professional apply the paint for you and allow him to buy the paint or you to buy the paint that he prefers. Stripping and repainting a bad paint job is not cheap either. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact me. I have been a bodyman and dealt with paints since 1966. good luck Larry

I am assuming that you have an I-H tractor? I have had very good results using the I-H #2150 paint available at my local Case-I.H. dealer, it lays down good, has a bright lustre to it, and is relatively inexpensive. also does not require any special breathing apparatus. It is available in aerosol, quarts, or gallons. This is the first time I have seen paint come out of a spray can with equal results to a top end spray gun.

Do you guys know, is the Case IH 2150 a synthetic enamel?
How well does it hold up to fading from sunlight?
I need to paint some wheels on a McCormick Deering soon and might consider using it.
Just wondering how it might compare to PPG Omni acrylic enamel both in quality and price?

Omni is better paint, but a lot of people like Case-IH paint, as it is much better than "farm store" paint. I forget what IH 2150 costs, but Omni acrylic urethane is about $75/gal if I remember right, acrylic enamel will be slightly cheaper. Much of the cost of painting a tractor is not in the topcoat, but in things like epoxy primers, primer surfacers, reducers, etc, that should be used for a good job. Only takes a gallon of red to paint a letter series tractor. $75 is nothing compared to the time and other expense it takes to prep the tractor. If all you are painting is wheels, a quart is probably enough.

I can't tell you about fading from sunlight because my H farmall is not exposed that much, I use it to mow my 1.75 acres so it gets about an hour and a half exposure per week, and then it's back in the shed. I can tell you this , this tractor is an ongoing restoration project, part of it recieved new I.H. paint 3 to 4 years ago, I did not paint the hood at that time because I was looking for a better one, finally found one, and painted it and installed it just this spring, there is very little if any differance between the new paint on the hood, and the paint on the rest of the tractor.

IH 2150 paint is manufactured for Case/IH by Valspar, the sixth largest paint manufacturer in the world. It's good stuff. Locally, a gallon was about $45.00. Spray can $6.00. The spray can is an exact match to the gallon paint, excellent for touch-up work. And the spray can goes a long way.

That's interesting that the Case I-H paint is made by Valspar, because the BPS tractor paint that TSC stores carry is also made by Valspar.
Not much good said on this board about the BPS paint, however I have used it before and was satisfied enough with it. I heard it fades fast though, I would assume since the Valspar Case I-H paint is higher priced it is a higher grade of paint than the BPS. I have never used the Case I-H paint yet but probably will give it a try soon on some McCormick Deering wheels.

Valspar makes the tractor paint for almost all of the tractors BUT the formulas are different for each companys paint. (Valspar makes the tractor paints here in Rockford, Illinois.)(I have done electrical work in their factory.) Stores like Farm & Fleet's paint is made here at Valspar also but it is not the same formula (cheeper) as the tractor manufacture's paint. Just my 1 & 1/2 cents worth.
