I have painted a lot of tractors using IH red and standard JD green from the respective dealers. I am old fashioned and have never used automotive paint, clear coat, or hardner of any kind. Most of the tractors I have painted do not warrent use of expensive automotive paint. I am also worried about the effect of Isocyanates. I was wondering if a couple of coat of clear coat could be applied over IH red from my dealer?. Also does clear coat make the paint tougher, or just shine more?

Dwight:

I live in Florida, and the sun is brutal on my tractor finishes.

I painted my JD '70'D with PPG Green and a DuPont yellow acrylic enamel. I also clearcoated it for extra shine and UV protection.

I have also cleared over John Deere dealer green paint (with hardener), but waited quite a while until it had thorughly gassed off and hardened.

Since base coat clear cloat systems have a relatively soft base coat with the much harder clear on top, clearcoat will make the finish tougher, and more scratch resistant.

If necessary, I wet sand the color with 400 grit, and if I really want the clear to be glass smooth, I use wet 2000 grit sanding, 1500 cutting compound on my buffer, then 2000 compound, then a polishing/swirl mark remover. Wait a bit then rub on a wax.

You can really get it smooth that way.

Hey Frank -
Do you paint the other green also? I have 550 that is currently undergoing clutch job. While I have it tore down I am redoing brakes on some other odds and ends. This winter after fall chores a new paint job sure would look good.

Shep:

I've painted about every color there is over the years, but I hate to paint other peoples stuff. I always seem to get more bugs, dust, and runs that way !

I don't have a very good place to paint, so many times I have to paint the chassis outside, and do the sheet metal in the garage.

If I can help you out in any way, let me know. I just like to see old tractors fixed up....no matter what the color.

I too have only used the regular machinery enamels (not automotive types) and had good success as long as they're not in the sun too much. Even out of the sun they will get a bit dull but the color doesn't really fade. Recently I came across a "clear" topcoat of the same brand of machinery enamel that I have used (called Tremclad here in Canada and it would probably be the equivalent of Rustoleum, etc.). Anyways, this is just a brush, roll or spray-on clear coat (kind of like a clear varnish) and I did a tractor seat on one of my tractors and it really works good. Keeps it nice and shiny and there isn't the regular dulling of the shiny finish that you have just after painting. Next tractor I do I'm going to use it on the whole tractor after painting each of the parts.

If you want your tractor to shine better and be more resistant to scratches POLISH them. There seems to be a resistance to polishing tractors but it will protect a tractor the same as it will a car or truck.

If you already some light scratches you can buff them out with a good polish.
