Can Anyone tell me all the types of paint available? On all the tractors I have paint I always use the paint from the respective dealer. I want to find a more durable and fade resistant paint than just plain IH or JD paint. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dwight,

Here's a basic primer in paint chemistry (pdf file). I think you will find that most, if not all, of the "tractor paints" and the inexpensive industrial enamels are the types of paint referred to as "alkyd enamels". Another term for this same type of paint is "synthetic enamel". If you are looking for a better quality of paint, you should look at the acrylic enamels or the urethanes. They do come at a higher cost but, IMO, are worth it in the long run. Be forewarned that urethanes and all enamels with performance-improving "hardeners" have a unique health hazard associated with their use because of isocyanates in the hardeners. Do a search on this term in this forum for prior posts on this important aspect of modern paints.
