Why is my H finish not smooth

Hello,

Today I painted my Farmall H outdoors with Case/IH 2150 enamel. I primed with Case/IH primer, thinned the paint 8 to 1, and used a compressor and cannister spray gun.

The paint did not turn out as smooth as I had hoped, even on the castings. What did I do wrong? Maybe I should have used more paint. For the chassis (without tank, hood and grill) I used a little more than half a gallon. Should I put on another coat, when can I do it, and what prep is needed?

I have not done the tank, hood and grill yet so any advice would be appreciated.

Randy

I recently used the 2150 paint and thinned with
lacquer 8 parts paint to 1 thinner. It seemed to go on real well and dried to the touch in about an hour.

Like the one guy said, experiment.

I am not sure what would happen if you painted in direct hot sunlight, that could be a problem if the metal is too warm.

OK, now I'm not familiar with that brand, but a few thoughts, I wonder about that 8:1 ratio.... 8 parts paint or 8 parts thinner... Either way it sounds a bit off, or the gun could be way out... It almost sounds like the paint is drying mid-air... Too much thinner, and too much air, will tack it on in a dust like way, giving you a rough and "dusty" finish. I would probably start out with a 50 / 50 mix and see how it shot out of the gun on a test surface (even a card board box) and go from there...You're looking for a nice wet look... without any runs... Takes practice....
The castings are supposed to be rough according to many restore'rs, and makes for a nice look. If it's soon enough, you might be able to paint right over your "dusty" work and have it gel back in, though, you may need to wire brush, and start over.
Good luck and let us know

You didn't describe the nature of your finish. One possibility is that you used too much air and not enough paint. In this case the finish will be rough. When you put the paint on you want it to look wet. Then you want to do the overlaps correctly. Good luck.
