My first restoration attempt involves an old 1939 Farmall A. The old paint is chipped and faded badly. My concern is re-doing the gas tank! What is required to SAFELY remove the old finish from the tank and repaint it.

The best and safest way to do a good job of reconditioning a fuel tank inside and outside is to take the fuel tank to the local radiator shop and have them vat it for you. Then have them use a good tank liner liquid in it. Then you get a clean tank inside and outside and no dirty fuel problems.

On the fuel tanks I have done seal them up and sandblast them there are some sparks but I have not had any problems.

I've done bunches of gas tanks with nothing but a sharp putty knife and hand sanding. Oh yes, lots of elbow grease.

The fiber brush really works good, beats the heck out of sandpaper, but it took about 3 of them to do the gas tank, hood and grill of my Super H. It will leave scratches, however. Of course it doesn't fit in the nooks and crannies. My experience with a power sander and normal sandpaper has not been good.

I remove the tank. On my Super H, my current project, I washed out all the gas I could with water, and filled and emptied the tank 3 times, still had some gas smell. I then used a 3M fiber brush, about $9 from Walmart and an electric drill. My gas tank was nothing but rust on the outside, otherwise I would have used paint stripper as the Rod said.

Hi Joe,

I assume you are concerned about the potential for sparks during a power sanding operation? I assume you are not talking high heat work, like a torch. If you can get a decent surface with a chemical stripper, I'd try that. If there are rust spots to severe to handle with hand sanding, I'd fill the tank with water as a precaution against any sparking problem.
