Sorry if this shows my extreme tractor painting inexperience, but I have several questions about Case/IHC 2150 paint:

1. What type of primer is best to use with it?
2. Can 2150 be bought in an aerosol can, and if so,
3. Will aerosol give as good a quality of paint job as conventional paint?
4. What is the lifespan of it?
5. How much does it cost?
6. How much is required to paint a Farmall Letter Series Tractor?
7. Is hardener required, and if so,
8. Is it available in aerosol?
9. What is the application method?
10. Do I need a respirator to use it?
11. Any other info/tips about it that you might have.

One gallon of 2150 from my local IH dealer was $43.00 several months ago. The spray cans were $6.50. The spray can is a perfect match and they last a long time. Great for touch-up work. You will get a better coverage from the spray can if you prime the surface first.

1. If bare metal use an epoxy primer, if not you need a sealer before using the IH primer.
2. Yes, the best aerosol paint there is.
3. No.
4. The non-aerosol when used with hardener will last several years, particularly on a little-used tractor kept inside. It is not as durable as higher priced paint, however.
5. Don't remember, more than farm store paint, considerably less than the good stuff.
6. About a gallon for an H or M, less for an A,B,or C.
7. Works best, lasts longer, is more durable, and has higher gloss with hardener. You MUST use an air supplied system with hardener, a twin cartridge mask is not sufficient.
8. No
9. Use a good HVLP spray gun.
10. A twin cartridge respirator with new filters is ok for unhardened paint. If you have a beard, shave it off or get an air supplied system.
11. Case-IH paint is adequate, it is not the best paint in the world. DuPont, PPG, or Martin-Senour acrylic enamel with hardener, or (preferred) acrylic urethane are better. Acrylic urethane will not cure properly without hardener. I am picky and remove everything from the tractor, and take everything to bare metal first. It takes a LONG time.

CNKS, I beg to disagree with you on subject #3, I painted my 1940 H using only aerosol cans of 2150, have had several favorable comments, most people can't believe I used spray cans.

If you have the technique, fine. Most people don't. It may look good, maybe even better than I can do with a spray gun. But, if you are that good with cans, imagine what you could do with acrylic urethane with hardener, or a base coat/clear coat. There is the quality of the paint, then there's the quality of the painter.

I can get the results I want only with the Case-IH paint, I have tried with Van-Sickle brand and it does not work, I get runs and uneven coverage just like you would expect with aerosol cans.

2150 is excellent, I have a couple of cans of Van Sickle that I will pay someone to take off my hands--worst paint I have ever used.

I will try and answer some of your questions.

I just painted my IH and used 2150 IH paint with hardner. You will need respirator and an air source for breathing.

I used rustoleum spray paint to get into the hard to get places, let it dry for a couple of days, then painted with the 2150. The rustoleum is called International red #7466, and is an implement paint that I bought at Menards. You will need about 7 cans, and don't put it on thick, let your 2150 IH make the final coat. The Rustoleum can be used to paint small parts, its handy for that, and matches very closely.

I think you wouldn't be happy without using the hardner, but you need to take the necessary precautions.

A tractor is the hardest thing to paint cause of all the nooks and crannys. An experienced painter will have different ideas, I am not experienced but what I did worked for me.
