OK guys before I started painting anything important (my machinery & tractors) I figured I better get the wife's car all one color from the deer incident - have an HVLP setup from Harbor Freight - seems OK -- it doesn't use much material - (which might be part of the problem) but it does an OK job - my problem is this - I don't think I was getting material out fast enough and so it was drying faster than I was spraying - so my clear coat, instead of being smooth and clear and shiny has a look of being just hit by a real fine water mist - a rather interesting texture - kinda nice for machinery but not so great for the car - so should I wet sand with some real fine sandpaper or what?
I used about the right amounts of paint and clearcoat (nason) for the job, but I am stumped and looking for options.....
not a real body guy by any means -

i tried a little turtle wax polishing compound by hand and it didn't seem to phase it.....

Sounds like you "dry sprayed" it. Some folks think that HVLP is the best thing since sliced bread. I have yet to find one that can keep up with a good gravity fed Devilbiss. but anyway...

You will need to sand the clear down to a smooth surface. Most likely you will cut into the base coat and therefore you might as well count on a repaint of the entire car.

Use 240 grit on your DA sander to smooth out the surface and remove most if not all of the clear. I would then follow up with with a good sanding using 320-360 grit. Be sure to sand around edges well but try to avoid cutting through to bare metal. The best way to avoid this is to sand by hand using a good quality sanding block.

Now you can spray one more coat of paint and then the clear.

this jerry guy must work for somebody that sells materials you didnt dry spray it you just didnt reduce it enough try 800 on a da and then buff it start with a (white) waffle pad and compound and then go to a (gray)smoother waffle pad and polish it be careful sanding around any bodylines or handles mirrors trim etc. as for the gun the hvlps are awesome i have painted completes with a quart of base but the harbor freight deal leaves a little to be desired if you are going to do much painting get a SATA you will be glad you did hope this helps
