Has any one had trouble using Martin Senour- (NAPA) epoxy primer-sealer #5120 under John Deere synthetic enamel ? The product data sheets tell two different tails. The epoxy sheet says donot use it with syn.enamel.But the synthol sheet says to use it. Called the company and they said to be safe donot mix the two.So what is up? Any help will be appreciated. Tom

I'm not a JD person, doesn't matter. For best results, instead of trying to save a few dollars, why don't you just use Martin Senour acrylic enamel? Higher quality than synthetic enamel. I like to buy most of my parts from my Case-IH dealer, but one thing I don't buy is paint (except for spray cans). Case-IH paint is also synthetic enamel.

I do not have much experience doing painting, but I am curious as to how you can tell if you have an acrylic enamel or a synthetic enamel? I have a gallon of AGCO Oliver Meadow Green and all it says is enamel.

Also, I will be doing some priming soon, and have been reading about the different primers. It seems like the epoxy is a good choice because it etches and seals in one primer. However, is it better to do an etching primer followed by a sealing primer?

A straight epoxy primer does not etch. Read my post to John(NE) regarding Rass O Nil above. I am talking about bare metal, if you use Rass O Nil followed by an epoxy primer, you do not need an etch primer, as the Rass o Nil does the etching. You do not need a sealer if you have bare metal. If you are painting over old paint you need a sealer. I don't paint over old paint for two reasons: 1. I don't know what is under it--many people simply paint over rust, which continues to rust, so I have to go to bare metal anyway. 2. In sanding the old paint (a lot of work), you are going to expose bare metal in places anyway, might as well remove all of it and do it right. So the procedure is: Bare metal by what ever procedure you prefer. Rass O Nil, then epoxy on the cast, then topcoat. On the sheet metal, epoxy, then primer surfacer, sand smooth and repeat the primer surfacer until you are satisfied, topcoat.
