Any suggestions on a good chemical paint remover? I've got an old pickup that has a couple layers of paint on it that I want to get rid of, last coat was primer and it rusted down to the metal.

Any suggestions appreciated... Thanks.

Used "Dad's Favorite" from Wal-Mart and it worked OK. Took 2 and 3 applications to get down to bare metal. Unfortunately there was rust under the paint so it needed to be sanded anyway. At least I didn't have to ruin more sandpaper.

Thanks for the additional suggestions!!!!

Regardless of the type of stripper you use, They all work better if you can get them down into the lower layers. Sand the top layer with 36 grit paper. Don't try to remove the paint just give it a little scuffing.

Use a sharp knife of razor blade to cut through the paint into the deepest layer. I usually just scratch a series of X's all over the metal. This allows the stripper to get under the top layer and work on the bottom layers speeding up the process considerabley.

Steven, Try using plastic wrap over the liquid stripper to keep it from drying out when you walk away from it, also a little siphon feed sand blaster will not warp the metal as you are only hitting the small crevices, ( it takes forever with one of these things) and I use a phosphoric acid mixture from the body supply shop to treat the metal for primer to stick good, get it good and clean, just like a good welder always grinds before he welds,to get it clean!!!!

Buy some "cheap" paint remover at Walmart. Like the post below says, don't breath the stuff. It may take a couple of applications. If there is rust underneath, 3M makes a fiber paint stripper that fits an electric drill, it will remove paint also -- $8-10 a piece. They really work, but wear out fast, it took at least two to do the sheet metal on my Super H. There was no paint left just rust. Paint comes off easier than rust. Will take several to do a whole pickup. They do more damage than sandpaper, that should not be a problem if you use a fast build primer surfacer.

I used something called Aircraft metal stripper. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and be aware that it is very toxic. Also, make sure you remove every bit of it before painting. Persoanlly, I wouldn't use it again. If the part is heavy metal or cast use a sandblaster, and on sheet metal I like the wire brush on a grinder.

I have seen in books that there are places that do a caustic soda bath. It removes paint and grease.

I went looking at chemical strippers, found a few to choose from, so I thought I'd research it further on the web. As I was headed to the computer in my home office, I walked past a gallon jug of Klean-Strip "Strip-X" multipurpose stripper in a red can that my wife had used to strip varnish off some chairs. I tried it and it worked quite well. This is on a 1950 Ford truck with at least 3 coats of paint (black, orange and green, wonder what they were thinkin'?). There's probably better stuff, but this worked and it's water clean-up.

Take it to a sand blaster and let him clean it down to bare metal....save you hours of elbow grease..... .

Have checked with a couple local sand blasters, they say it will warp the metal. But I'll check with a couple more body shops - I wonder how much soda blasting costs?

Thanks for the suggestion!

I too am struggling with what to do with my 61 F-100 body. I have gotten two bids on having the body media blasted. They ranged from "about" 800 to a solid 960 for everything in/out and on the bottom. I am doing this resto for fun and just am having a dickens of a time springing for a grand to have it blasted...even though I know that is what the pros would do. I have a little kettle type blaster and am still toying with the idea of using a combination chemical/media. I have the body off the frame and everything (and I do mean everything) stripped out of it and the doors. The front clip is completely apart too.

Oh! By the way, on the 8N tractors I have done in the past, I used a lot of Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove paint. It is relatively cheap at the Dollar Store and does a pretty good job. I like the aircraft stripper too but it is more $$. Por-15 makes a stripper and I have a gallon but have not used much of it yet.
