An old body guy I was talking to today said to buy ordinary household ammonia and mix it with water 50-50. Spray newly blasted parts with it and they will not flash rust (he said for a long time). Sounded a little hokey, is it for real? What would be the chemistry?

Metal Ready from Restomotive (POR15 people) is a zinc phosphate and can be used in a pump bottle to hold bare metal rust free for several weeks.

I'm not so sure he wasn't pulling your leg...water causes bare metel to rust, and ammonia is an acclerent for rust. If you've ever put a sprayer on a disc and sprayed ammonia and herbicide, you'll see what will happen in a short time!

Seems anything combined with water will cause rust, I don't know. What will work is a product called Rass o Nil, also known as Picklex 20. About $30 a pint from www.autobodystore.com, but a pint will do a whole tractor. Comes in squirt bottles, smooth it out with a brush. It is not a navel jelly type stuff, but is thin like metalprep, and leaves a smooth finish, or at least smooth enough to level with 3M pads, etc. Contains phosphoric acid and zinc. Protects the newly prepared metal from flash rust, and will also convert flash rust, or rust that your sandblaster did not remove. It says when you use it that you don't need primer. However, I would use epoxy primer, then paint. If it sits for any period of time, scuff it before priming. Lasts at least several months, as long as you keep it dry.
