Sandblasting question

I have a pot type blaster. It takes the fine, silica sand very well but it plugs frequently with what is called sandblasting sand. That sand is more like what you'd find as fill sand and is a lot more variable in particle size. What I want to know is whether there is a media that I could put through my blaster that prevent damage to the sheet metal. I have heard of glass, soda, corn cobs, etc. but I am not certain where to buy these materials and whether they will go through my blaster without a lot of hassle.

Just had a guy come to my place and charges 85.00 an hour. Have to have at least 2 hour work or he charges a set-up charge. He worked 3 1/2 hours and charged me 297.00. His only question was was how heavy the sheet metal was because if to light it may be possible to blow a hole in it. He did almost 2 complete tractors for me plus some other misc. parts. Was totally satisfied with the results. I also have a small preasure blaster plus a cabinet blaster and he can do in 5 minutes or less than it would take me an hour plus to do. I just use my stuff for the smaller parts any more.

I don't know much about sandblasting, but the professional sandblaster I take my wheels and rims to (I use wire brushes and chemical stripper on everthing else) uses the fine silica sand you mentioned; it costs about $4.50 a 80 lb bag. He has a 250 CFM unit. TP Tools (I think the web address is www.tptools.com, if not do a search), has some of the other media you mentioned. Although it seems expensive to me, you can reuse it.

I plan on using some chem stripper too but thought things might go faster with the blaster. The lowest bid I got on blasting the body of this old truck was $800. I think I might be able to buy a lot of media (or sand) for that!

Yeah, that's 178 bags or over 14000 lbs of sand. Don't know how your price is figured, but the guy I went to did two rear wheels plus rims, two front wheels and the rims plus the front bolster and manifold of my Super H for $120. Probably took him 30 minutes. I think he used about 4 bags. So, $800 for a truck seems high to me. The different media will make the cost higher, of course.

Use a mask when you use silica as it can do permant damage to your lungs.
