I am in the beginning stages of restoring a 1968 Scout 800 that is a complete rust bucket but runs great. Anyway, while the truck rests in my garage until I can afford the body man, I would like to paint the frame, springs, driveshafts and axles. The frame is rusty, but I have been knocking that off with a wire wheel. I would like something that kills the rust and looks kinda nice if you stick your head under the truck.
I think I prefer to brush it on.

Thanks in advance.

I have been working on a 61 F-100 and did the same thing you are talking with your Scout. I used a product called POR-15 for the frame, leaf springs, axles etc. I brushed it but you can thin it for spraying with their extender. It brushes on fine an dries smooth and hard! It needs some rust to lock on to, so I didn't blast the frame, only washed, brushed and cleaned really good. The only downsides of the stuff is the cost and that fact that it is UV light sensitive. It is supposed to have an overcoat if it will be exposed to the sun. It dulls the finish over time if it is not overcoated and sets in the sun. I found a cheaper subsitute also from Magnapaints (sp)? I have used some of that too and it seems to be just as good but less expensive. Search the archives and I am sure you will come across hits for both.

Rod, thanks for your excellent reply. I will look for that product at my local NAPA store.

Hi Phlogiston,

Interesting handle.

I suggest you try some Loctite Extend rust treatment. It is also marketed under the Permatex brand, also called Extend, at NAPA stores. It needs a rusty surface to work properly. Just get the loose stuff off with a wire brush as you are doing. It can be brushed on (preferably) or a roller used. I would not recommend spraying it. My limited experience with spraying the stuff has not been good; it can gum up a good gun in no time flat. It goes on in two coats and turns a jet black. I did a trial section on an old rusty dump body of mine two years ago. I never topcoated it (it was a trial, afterall). It has been outside in the weather constantly. Still no signs of any rust showing through. It looks real good and I think would be appropriate for your application.

Here's some on-line information about the product.

Rod(NH),

That stuff looks interesting. Looks like it would be a good primer for an old plow or other equipment. Am I right?

Hi Trevor,

Sure, it should work well for that. I have a pair of pick-up plows for my AC-B that need such a treatment. I wouldn't go to the trouble of sandblasting, etc so I am thinking of doing mine that way. Trouble is time and that is a low priority project.
