Hi, I'm 17 and have started restoring tractors. I have been working on a 52 JD A for 8 months. I have already painted it 3 times using JD Classic green, JD Thinner, and Hardner. I have tried several paint to thinner ratios. But, the paint will either run too easily, or will not lay down at all and have orangepeel. I have tried 8 parts paint, 2 parts thinner, and 1 part hardner. Then I have also tried 6 parts paint, 4 parts thinner, and 1 part hardner. I was just wondering what ratio's some of you all use. Thanks

Actually the factory pack jd green from the dealership mixes beatifully with acrylic enamel hardener and fast reducer for a superb finish that will dry overnight at FAR less cost than dedicated autopaint. This keeps the costs down and the finish quality high Try mixing it 40% paint 50% reducer and mix in a bit of the hardener like adding milk to your coffe. You want the final mix to be roughly the consistency of light cream where it runs off the stick smoothly. If it sprays rough "orange peel" thin it bit more. Try to spray it when it's the coolest part of the day and never in direct sunlight.
It will take at least three to four coats allowing a few minutes dry time between coats.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi - I would listen to cnks and rod - they both are very helpful in this forum and have invaluable experience. They have helped me out in the past.
Im fairly new at this restore game also, but I have found that JD paint and IH paint from the implement dealer is only good for implements. When my Dad and I have a tractor to paint we go with the PPG or Napa Pro Brand Paints. So much better its hard to believe. Also - please listen to Rod and CNKS - do not use harderners with iso's unless you have a fresh air supply system.

I agree with Rod. As to the hardener, JD paint is synthetic enamel, which is old paint chemistry -- I don't know if the ratio of paint to hardener is given on the can or not. You might ask this on the JD board, should be lots of people who have done that. DO NOT use hardened paint without a supplied air system, a twin cartridge mask will not filter out isocyanates. If you are new to painting, and don't want to spend the money on the proper equipment, skip the hardener.

Hi Blake,

Isn't that information on the can label? You have the best chance for a successful paint job if you strictly follow the paint manufacturer's written instructions. If you do that and you still have problems, you need to look elsewhere for a solution.
