I need to paint a piece of galvanized sheet metal duct. What is the best method of doing it so the paint will stick on? Planning on using white rustoleum (R) spray paint on it. Will strong vinegar work to etch the galvanized finish before painting? Thanks, AWB

Yes, you can etch it with vineger, it will dull the galvanizing by oxidation and actually speeds up the aging process of the plating. A lot of old timers would not paint galvanized metal until it weathered and dulled. vinegar will do this in minutes apply with a rag two times in a 10 minute period and rinse with fresh water, dry thouroughly and paint.

Hi AWB,

I have had excellent luck painting galvanized by treating with a two step phosphoric acid treatment (PPG DX-579 plus DX-520) followed by a two part epoxy primer (PPG DPLF). DuPont has similar products. A less expensive PPG epoxy is their OMNI MP-170 which I think would do nicely also but I have not yet used it over galvanized. I have no idea on the vinegar.

If the piece is not too large, Napa sells a tall can of Self Etching Primer that sprays really smooth and sands nicely after an overnight dry. It makes excellent spot repair primer too as it doesn't edge lift. Pretty good stuff for small jobs. I've never heard of the vinegar etch method either. : )
