While visiting major tractor/manchinery and automotive manufacturing plants over the years I have observed many changes in their painting methods and equipment. Today they have millions of dollars invested in painting! Recently one major machinery company spent $30,000,000.00 updating their painting equipment and facilities. Automatic/robot equipment is used with climate controlled booths for the primary painting. Human finish painters look like space robots with their total body suits, face masks and air supply systems. With all this, some times the paint still ends up with faults requiring touch up and repainting. The first job many workers in these plants willing to give up to automation is painting! This should give us insight into the difficult task we have painting under most of the conditions many of us have in our shops. Modern paints are health hazards used under the best of conditions, begining painters need to be made aware of this. As my machinist friend tells his customers, have many miles of happy motoring, I say have many hours of happy painting! :-)

Times change. There is a picture in the January issue of Harvester Highlights of a guy painting in one of IH's plants in the 30's with only a dust mask. Doubt if he made it to the 40's.
