I recently acquired a W-9 that has been "restored". It is in excellent mechanical condition, but the paint job looks like crap on a white duck. It is hard to assess what surface preparation was done. The paint appears to have been applied in qood quantity with no runs, but there is a lot of orange peel effect on the sheetmetal. There are rust pits on the fenders that were painted over. I would like to redo the paint job.

Do I sand the existing surfaces, prime, block, and repaint, or should I strip and start from scratch?

I agree with CNKS that you will need to strip it down to bare metal to do it right. Painting over what is already there would be like building a new house on an old cracked foundation and since you say the old paint is junk you would be asking for trouble. I've found that it is usually easier to strip the whole tractor down to bare metal than to try and fix the old paint to where it is ready to paint over. If the rust is not properly dealt with it will come back to haunt you someday. Sounds like you have several fun projects ahead of you and be sure to post a link to your website when you get it up and running.

Lot of different opinions on this. If it were my tractor I would strip it. You will probably find that the person who "restored" it painted over rust, which may cause problems later on. It may be possible to sand the whole thing, and use epoxy primer to seal the old surface, but there are no guarantees. Which ever route you go, use the epoxy, bare metal or old finish.

CNKS: Thanks! I have read a good deal of your painting posts and value your input.

You are probably right in saying that rust was painted over. The hood, grill, and tank do not hint at having rust entrapment. I will sand, and epoxy seal those pieces. The fenders are another story. These are pitted. The W-9's fender surfaces are about 1/4 acre square in area so sanding these off will take until Easter. I'll strip and blast these. The drive train castings and wheel centers are just plain butt-ugly with respect to how they were cleaned and prepared--lumpy looking and no lustre. I would be neat to just drive the whole tractor thru a blast bin and get it over with.

My brothers and I are starting a Farmall website. I have copied and saved a few or your painting tips especially the ones that reference proper IH paint colors and paint quality. I wanted this info because we three are embarking on painting of a 504, 460, 400 (soon to be a 450), the W-9, a Regular, and possibly an H. With your permission, I would like to post some of your info on our website.

You don't need my permission. Both the paint codes and the different types of paint were learned from this site, plus other people I correspond with, plus reading books. Rod(NH) and Cliff have been a great help, except that Cliff doesn't post here often enough (he hangs out on the Red Power Forum). Therefore everything I say is due to the knowledge of others. I serve as the messenger. I merely take that knowledge and try to put it to use, both on this board and my own painting. Seems to have worked so far.

I also owe most of what I know to this site and others, especially the autobodystore.com forum where I learned alot of tips that I feel took my painting from good to professional quality. I will be doing a series of painting articles for Red Power Magazine in the coming months for anybody who subscribes to it.
