I posted this on tool talk, without thinking about this board. Now here I am. I buy and sell old farm equipment, like so many of us. I try to make the good stuff, look as good as I can. It just brings more that way. Up untill now, I have had to use "spray bombs". I can get a decent paint job with one, but nothing like with a gun. Years ago, I worked at a business that had me using a Binks #7 gun. I got to be fairly good with it. I think that it will come back to me, with some practice. I am going to paint an old tractor that I've been restoring, and want to do it right. Time to buy a gun. What kind of gun do you use? What brands are popular these days? What about the "gravity feed" guns? Are they OK, or are they for "house painters" as I have been told? How much should I look to spend on a good quality gun? What about the Campbell/Hausfeld guns? They look cheap. Are they any good? Like I said, I have used a Binks gun. I know there is a huge difference between good and bad. Let's hear some thoughts. Thanks, John

You will do fine with any of the moderately priced gravity guns out there today. I like the Devilbiss guns myself, I own several & I also like the sharpe guns. Most online stores are running specials on the devilbiss finishline guns these days. check out www.smartshoppersinc.com I buy a lot of stuff from those guys, they are priced very well.

Good luck

Rod and Cliff: Forget what I said in the response below about Omni AU single stage being discontinued. Paint dealer says he was wrong and they can still mix it. They discontinued something else. I'm no expert but this particular paint dealer cannot be relied on to know what is going on, so I can't rely on them for advice, etc -- just you guys, who of course know more than my dealer!

I use several guns, all gravity feed except for a 2 1/2qt pressure pot gun for big projects. My main gun is a Sharpe Platinum which will lay down even urethane paint smooth as glass. The picture is the door of our recently painted IH 1086 painted with Omni single stage urethane and my Platinum, the picture was taken in a dark shop with no flash so it actually looks better in real life. I recently purchased a CH gravity feed gun (model number 7800 I think) for a primer gun but I haven't tried it with paint yet. I also have a small cheap gravity feed touch up gun that does okay with paint but the gun itself has several small problems related to being a $15 gun (figured I didn't have much to loose). I was hooked on gravity feed guns the first time I used my Platinum and would think twice about a suction gun even if it was given to me.

Trying to see if my PPG dealer is giving me the runaround. He says that PPG has/will soon stop making PPG Omni AU single stage (still has the acrylic enamel) and has already gotten rid of his unused stock. I'm painting my Super H next week, and he ordered me some premixed from their distribution center in Denver. Have you or anyone heard anything about this? Rod(NH)?

Hi CNKS,

No, I haven't heard anything about PPG discontinuing OMNI MTK (AU single stage). Of course I am not in any position to hear such things anyway :o). I hope not since I have had good luck with it. It's a decent, cost effective paint. But then again I liked their Delstar (DAR AE) very much and I can't get that any more, at least around here. The next step up for AU in PPG would be "Concept" single stage in their main Deltron line. As far as I know, that stuff is a LOT more expensive. Plus there is no mix formula in that line for the early AC Persian Orange that I like (PPG 60080). I suppose if I can no longer get it in MTK, I will migrate to the MAE w/hardener or get into the DuPont (NASON) line if I can get a proper color match there.

It is also possible it is just a local issue with your supplier. He may simply not be selling enough of it to justify keeping all the mix colors on hand. If he supplies the local body shops, there is likely more of a demand for the base/clear line or the higher end Deltron in single stage urethane. He would need to keep the mix colors for those if they are his "bread and butter" in addition to duplicating everything in a lower end single stage. But I am just guessing here.

Rod and Cliff -- I hope you are right, but the guy did say that PPG was discontinuing -- I don't know if he knew what he was talking about. As long as he can order it, it's ok, just inconvenient -- no more running to the store for an extra pint if something goes wrong.

My dealer never said anything about it either when I bought this paint a couple weeks ago. Last year he had to order the Omni but he now has a mixing stand, I don't know how long they've had the mixing stand but I wouldn't think they would get it if the paint was being discontinued. Several of the body shops around here use some Omni products because the top end products are getting too expensive for anything but very late model vehicles.
