terry, youcan get in trouble with using the small cans of primer paint. I bought a gallon can of red oxide primer at the farm store. I brush it on every part after i wired brushed it and cleand off all old paint. I reassembled all parts after they were primered. IN the end i had it sprayed with automotive enamel. All i did was lightly sand the red oxide brushed primer with 180 grit paper whee it would show on the tank and fenders and hood. The red oxide will stick to bare metal and rusty metal if it is wire brushed to get the loose stuff off first. I did this to a truck frame 2 years ango and it turned out great, thats why i did the entire tracotr that way.

You will not need a special primer for engine parts. The only part that will get hot enough to affect paint and/or primer is the exhaust manifold.
