I went to NAPA so while there bought a gallon of Martin Senour 6387 Fin-L-Wash for $32.00. I then checked the tech sheet on how to use it. No problem so far. Then I looked at the MSDS sheet on it and it says the product is 100 per cent mineral spirits! I can get mineral spirits for one he** of a lot less than $32. What part of this do I not understand?

Hi Rick,

That's interesting. Your post got me to thinking what is in the stuff I use (PPG DX330 Acryli-Clean). I have never checked the MSDS before on it because I had no particular concern. The DX330 has several ingredients but "mineral spirits" is not listed among them. I haven't bought any for several years and have forgotton the cost but I don't think it was up around $32.00 per gal.

Here's one article that indicates it is a "high grade" of mineral spirits unlike that found in hardware stores. I guess I will have to reserve judgment on that since I don't know any of the details. There is a big price difference there that I find hard to rationalize. It's also interesting that the same article lists both DX330 and MS6387 in the same "cleaner" category.

CNKS, you bought any DX330 recently? Price?

Anyway Rick, you are not alone in wondering about it. I am not into the MS line but I would be interested in a good explanation of just what is so "high grade" about the MS mineral spirits that could possibly justify the cost.

$24.54/gal as of a couple of weeks ago. Brings up a question: Is it ok to use DX 330 on wet-sanded primer-surfacer after cleaning it good with water, immediately before topcoating, as long as I wipe it off immediately or should I use something that is not as strong? Local paint store does not seem to have any of the milder PPG cleaners.

Significantly less than the MS6387. Interesting. I see no problem in using the DX330 as a final wash prior to topcoating. I have done it that way without problems. I am not into wet sanding anything though; a matter of preference more than anything else. I see on PPG's website that they now have a DX320 that they recommend for a final wash (for fingerprints, etc,). It is supposed to be a faster evaporating product but I have never used it. When I began using PPG (back when their automotive paint line carried the Ditzler branding), DX320 didn't exist and the 330 was considered a mild, general purpose cleaner to also be used for any final wash. It was good enough then for that purpose and should be good enough now unless you want to shave a few minutes off the time for that step. Like you, I am not a production shop so whatever small difference in time may exist is not important.
