I really enjoy this site even though my two tractors paint is kind of rough from use in the field. My question refers to my implements which I have to leave out in the weather, I would like to just keep a coat of cheap paint on them to prevent them from being rusted over. If I rented a steam pressure washer to clean my implements with would it be sufficient at preping it enough for a coat of primer and paint?

Rich,

I am not an expert, and have been out of the business since joining the service in '85. I think that this depends on the finish that you are wanting and looking for. Have done this before and the paint job held up on the implements as well as any other methods. I also took a steam cleaner to a Farmall M that we were prepping at one of the shops that I had worked at. After I got through with it very little sanding was needed, and it primed out well then when one of the guys I worked with did his magic with the paint gun, it looked brand new. I knew the guy that bought it, and he kept it in the shed after use. 5 years later it still looked real good. I would say that it depends on the finish that you are looking for whether or not to pressure wash it, primer and paint it or not. But then again, I am far from an expert at anything, and definately not a painter.

Yes, if you rough up the surface with some 180 grit and scrape and sand any loose paint chips and corrosion off. Then soak it in oven cleaner for about 30 minutes to kill any rust stains on the remaining paint then pressure wash, dry and wipe down with laquer thinner then tack rags to catch the loose stuff before you prime. The primer will show you any areas that need extra attention.
Should be good enough for those kind of implements that are left outside.
