Respirator Question

I'm planning to buy a clean air respirator with remote air pump to use when spray painting using hardners.
I am an occasional painter and don't paint real often but want to be safe while painting. A half mask should be fine. What should I buy? Thanks in advance!

Hi Tugboat,

Good for you. You will never regret purchasing a fresh air system if you wish to work with modern paints. I do recommend either a full face piece or a hood instead of the half mask. Or a hood in addition to a half mask. You should protect your eyes as well as your lungs. Although I have not used one, the Hobby-Air systems seem to be great for a reasonably inexpensive commercial package for the occasional user. You can find out some information and typical prices on the available units here. Something for you to consider.

Rod; Thanks for the information. I ordered a Hobbyair 11 with 80' hose and full facemask today.
I plan to use it when I paint, work with fiberglass insulation, heavy sanding and etc. I think it will be "just what the doctor ordered"!
Thanks, Tugboat

Thanks for the link.... I have been reading all the talk on secondary air and have talked myself into spending the money and play safe.... My son (26) and myself are starting to have some fun painting.... so far we are using the face masks but doesn't sound good enough....

Is there any specific requirements for compressors???

Thanks....

Keep up the talk, I'm learning lots...

Glen

Hi Glen,

The chemical cartridge type of respirator is fine except for urethane paints, most clear coats and enamels where a hardener is used. Some will disagree but the general industry-wide concensus is that such materials contain especially toxic isocyanates and that a fresh air breathing system is required for "proper" protection.

Are you asking about compressors for supplying breathing air? The Hobby-Air system has its' own turbine for supplying the air and does not require a separate compressor. The system I use is a full facepiece supplied by a dedicated, non-lubricated, tankless compressor. This is not a commercial system; just something I found to work well some years ago. For a more detailed discussion on breathing air supply, see this earlier thread.
