I am in the process of restoring a 154 Cub LoBoy. I have taken it apart, stripped to bare metal, E-primed and given parts two topcoats of PPG Omni Acrylic Urethane. I have reassembled the frame and have it standing on its feet again minus the sheet metal and motor. I would like to give everything one more topcoat to cover some scratches and places where it looks a little thin. My problem is that it has been 3 months since last topcoat and may be a little longer until I can get back to the project.(maybe next Spring) Will I be able to do this without having to rough anything up since it is mostly castings and hard to sand type pieces? It is really looking good and would hate to mess up at this point. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance and have a great day! Jhan (Jan) in Arkansas

Hi JK,

Urethanes cure fairly rapidly. The tech sheet for the OMNI MTK permits clearcoating up to a maximum of one week after the final color coat. I would presume the same would apply to a delayed final color coat. After that time the surface should be scuffed to dull the gloss and provide some "tooth" for decent adhesion of subsequent coats. I agree with the others, you should scuff all surfaces prior to anymore coats. For that you can use 400 grit or finer sandpaper. Recognizing that can be a pain on cast surfaces and in tight areas, I would suggest a good workover with a grey (ultra fine) 3M "SkotchBrite" pad. Like CNKS, I have not done so but that is how I would approach the matter if I had to. You can even get this material in 3M "Roloc" discs for use in an eletric drill to save on the elbow grease :o).

Thanks for the advice Rod. Was looking at it last night and think I will be able to remove a few of the parts that are the most offensive and be able to scuff and repaint them without going over the whole Cub again. I don't have any of the sheet metal repainted or prepped yet so maybe it won't be as bad as I originally thought. Being a weekend warrior in the shop sure makes it hard to get it all together at one time but sure is a relaxing activity for me when I get the chance. Thanks again for the help everyone. Will let you know how it turns out. By the way am using a Citation HVLP paint system that has two turbines in one unit. A 3 stage for fresh air and a 4 stage for painting. Seems to work really well. You all made a believer out of me inreguards to being careful when using hardeners. Take care and be well! JK IN ARK

I'm using the PPG Omni system for my restoration and I really like that paint system. The only topcoating I'v gotten to so far is on the two front rims, but I really like it. I didn't go for the color/clearcoat - it is a tractor after all - but the one stage topcoat seems to have all the shine I would want.

Yes I really like the gloss that is on my Cub so far. It is Federal Yellow and has a nice gloss to it. I don't think I will do any clear coat either. If I get it too pretty I will be afraid to use it ;o) So far I have less runs in the paint than the factory paint job so I don't feel too bad if I see one on the casting where nobody will see it anyway. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the input guys. That's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately other things in life have come up that are more important than my Cub project and don't have a heated shop for this winter so I guess will have to step back and punt come Spring if things are better then. Always a pleasure reading these discussions though I don't have much to contribute yet. You have all taught me alot. Keep those old tractors shining! Sincerely, Jhan (Jan)in Arkansas

You will have to sand the entire area that you intend to repaint. The paint has cured completely and therefor offers no adhesion to the next top coats.

Sand what you can easily get to and just scratch up the other areas the best you can. Prior to spraying the next coats, shoot a coat of mid-coat adhesion promoter over the entire area. This will help "glue" the top coats to the previous paint.

I haven't had to face that situation, yet. I believe you only have 24 hours to respray Omni MTK without sanding. You "may" be able to get by with scotchbright pads, but after 3 months you are looking at a mostly cured, perhaps fully cured finish. Lets see what Rod(NH) has to say.
