any special considerations when spraying industrial / machinery paint. Is a larger nozzle needed or can the paint be thinned with mineral spirits and sprayed through a smaller nozzle?

Anyone tried or done this?

Yes, do it all the time with regular nozzle. Factory or Rustoleum works fine and I generally thin with acetone and use a spray mask. Use HVLP Devilbiss. Also I steer clear of TSC paint because of quality issues.
Mineral spirits takes forever to dry. Pays to read the back of can for thinner advice and try to use what is suggested.
I usually don't spray below 65 degrees or so.
