Ok, I know this is a little off topic but I figured your guys (Gene, Rod, CNKS and the rest) would get a kick out of this.

I have been watching some of the motorcycle building programs on Discovery Channel lately and it kills me every time they show the painting sequence. The "Pro" painters are all set up in there fancy boothes, talk about all their experience, dawn their white cover alls then put on a twin cartridge respirator. NO FRESH AIR FEED!

Is there something I'm missing? They are using BC/CC most times and very quick between coats so I figure they must be using hardener with isocyanates. Why do they not use a fresh air system?

Check it out guys and let me know what I'm missing.

I think alot of painters just don't realize how dangerous the iso's really are and think they are okay with just the masks. Paint companies and salesmen don't really go out of thier way to explain you need a $350 fresh air system to use their paint so alot of people just don't know and I wouldn't if it wasn't for reading in online. Even with the down draft paint booths there is enough overspray that they should have the supplied air units.

Hey, fellas, i painted cars for 40 years or so, using the old style paints! and used the 2 filter masks, which were sufficient for the old style paints! Then the mfgrs. came out with Centari and some other brands, in which we had to use hardener! The paint stores never said we had to use different paint masks, until much later, after the government got involved--by then it was too late for us long time painters! Now, if I'm any where near a paint shop when they are spraying the new paints, i go into an asthma type attack, and have to ride around in my truck with the windows open until it clears up! So, when the paint suppliers say to use an air supply mask--do it. And, if you have asthma, don't spray the paint--get somebody else to do it! Oh, one job won't kill ya', but if ya' do many jobs, it will make ya' wish you'd gotten an air mask! RJ

If I had listened to my paint dealer, I'd be dead by now. He said I didn't need a fresh air system, because cartridge masks are "the way we have always done it".

With the tight enviromental regulations in Kalifornia the paint manufacturers are supplying water borne paints to these areas. I don't think the isos are a problem with these formulas.

The water born paints do not have the health and enviro concerns of other formulas. HOWEVER the paint will not last nearly as long either.

Ahhh yes...Sunny California. The Granola State. Land of fruits, flakes and nuts.

If you are talking about American Chopper, they are out of Orange County New York, not CA. I thought the same thing till I saw snow on one show and did some investigating. =~) Monster Garage's Jesse James owns West Coast Choppers which is in Long Beach, CA.

I would agree with Gene as to the downdraft booth. I have heard about, but have not seen, body shops that don't use fresh air systems because most of the fumes are sucked out. My own experience has been that when I use a touchup gun for only a minute or so, with hardly any overspray, and use a twin cartridge mask, I feel the effects. Not gasping for breath, or respiratory problems, but a dizzy feeling. Has happened a couple of times. Hate to hook my system up for only a couple of squirts of isos, but looks like I have to. I don't think I've been doing isos long enough to become sensitized to them, but I am sensitized to certain pesticides, perhaps it's all related somehow. There was a post a while back, probably still in the archives, about OSHA requirements for isos. Depends on the concentration and length of exposure. It doesn't take much of either to get to me.

My guess would be that they figure since they have a top of the line down draft booth that they'll be ok. Guys I used to work at an aircraft refinishing facility and those guys were spraying Imron while only using their 3M respirators. I wonder if they're still alive.
I will say one thing about the chopper shows, finally the painters get some play on TV. If it wasn't for the painters, their bikes wouldn't look nearly as good lol.
There's no glamour or fame in painting tractors but we do our part to help Americas farmers feed the country and look great while their doing it!

I work at a hospital and can tell you that HIPPA regulations won't let us tell you that they are all in the ICU right now with respitory problems.

Actually I have no idea. I have watched the same shows and have the same questions.
