Rod(NH), please give more detail on your system.
CNKS, you also have more details to share.
I also had a bad experience like one Rod described, and that can't happen again.
Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

I am not sure if you read this post of mine but it describes the fresh air system I have used for a long time. I use a full face piece mask made by Pulmosan. I don't think Pulmosan exists as a name anymore but others make similar products. I got it 25 years ago for about $180 as I recall. It is similar to this one:

The dedicated compressor I use is a Campbell-Hausfeld 1hp "Super-Pal" that is also 25 years old. It is an oil-free, tankless, 115v unit that I don't think CH offers anymore but there should be similar ones available. My biggest complaint with my system is the extremely loud noise of the compressor. It's annoying but something I put up with since I do not use it often. As I remember the compressor cost about $150 back then.

Going this route will cost about the same (if not more) than the Hobby-Air turbine type system that you can now buy commercially. These were not available back when I put my system together.

Caveat: If you look into the compressor route, do NOT go by hp rating. Current methods of hp rating for compressors under about 10hp can be extremely deceptive. For a facepiece you need to supply at least 4 cfm and for a hood, 6 cfm. Those are the numbers that are important, not the hp. Also if you have to wear glasses, go for a hood arrangement instead of a facepiece. Eyes need protection also.

I have a Hobby Air system, with a hood, no mask. The air comes in around the bottom of the hood, through the tyvek (sp?). Works ok. The tyvek part of the hood is replacable, you use the old framework that fits to your head. A little clumsy dragging my paint gun hose and the hobby air hose around my small work area, but it works. The only detrimental thing I notice, is that when the blower runs several minutes, such as when I use my spot blaster with it, the air gets rather warm. Also when I finish painting and am trying to air out the building so I can go back in, I sometimes wear a twin cartridge mask, rather than hooking my hood back up. I need to stop doing that, or I won't be posting on this board much longer!
