Curiosity piqued by CNKS, I visited my auto paint store--again. This is a local chain of five stores with the one in my town having bought out a long-time automotive paint supplier about five years ago. The auto parts store hired the owner of the paint store.

Just to confirm, DuPont 96766 corresponds to IH 2150, while DuPont 7410 corresponds to IH 50. It was interesting looking at the hand written records that were kept, one note saying 96766 was "late 50s color". There was a color chip in their catalog of the IH 50/7410 and it is indeed darker than the 96766/2150. I could easily visualize that shade being the correct one for, say, and M. They had no color chip for the 96766/2150 to compare chips side by side.

Interestingly, the paint guy said that some of the data sheets he and I were looking at were relatively recent issue, and it was said of them that someone went to a lot trouble putting these together. We both agreed someone has recognized the growing tractor restoration market and has cooperated. The paint guy added that the only things getting painted around our area were insurance work and tractors.

And, in 1949 according to Guy Fay, IH switched to a color called 1102B, which was "a slightly lighter, yellower shade than IH 50, as well as being slightly more reflective--". To further quote Guy Fay --"In the late 1950's IH went to another paint with a different chemistry. IH 2150 switched back to the older IH 50 shade, although the paint was more reflective of light. Case IH currently uses 2150 as the basic match for all older paint, and it is in fact, a very close match for IH 50" -- It was this last sentence that convinced me to paint my tractors with 2150 equivalent instead of 50. Side by side 96766 will probably be different from 71310 (PPG 2150) which will probably be different from Case-IH 2150. The colors will also differ from batch to batch. I would still like to see 2150 and 50 side by side to see how much difference there really is. Only way to do that is to paint my next tractor with IH 50. With my recent painting luck, it would probably turn out green.

Sometime I would like to get a piece of sheet metal about 2'x3' and divid it into 6 squares where I can shoot 2150 side by side with the PPG #, the Gloss red used on the '81 and later IH tractors side by side with the PPG# and the PPG # for #50 red all on the side piece so the colors can be easily compared. I have some PPG 71310 left over and will be doing a tractor in the PPG Gloss Red number this spring so I will just have to buy a little of the #50 red to do it assuming I can find the time to do it.

Now I'm really confused. Your recent painting luck surely isn't so bad that your next job will turn out G...GG...GGGrreen! Anything but GREEN!

It's in its rough, construction stage but check this out. www.oldoakfarmalls.com. I've posted some background about the site on the Farmall Page.

Gosh...not GREEN!

Under florescent lights the 2150 chassis (cast) has a very definite orange tint to it -- just wondering how the other IH colors would turn out, I'll admit that green is doubtful, who knows? I always thought IH was red until I started trying to paint. BTW, I think I'm thru buffing. It turned out very well. Now I need to hide the hood, grille, and gas tank until I'm ready to reassemble, so I can stop looking for scratches, there are some, but I have done about all I can do. On the grille, I skipped the coarse compound and just used medium and fine (2 steps) looks as good as the others. The fine I used can be hand rubbed as a final step. But, I machine rubbed it first. I don't think you can get the medium compound scratches out by hand rubbing the finer compound. Also, I got better results by using 2000 rpm on the last step, 1000 rpm on the first step. Definitely more than one way to do this.

Now i am really confused. I thought the 50 was lighter in shade then the 2150. I am about 2 weeks away from having the body shop shoot my hood, grille and gas tank off my 52 super C. I would like to get it as close to original as possible. I have no other letter series tractors and really don't see me ever getting any. Any advice?

You're no more confused than I am. I got the impression somewhere that 50 was a brighter red. Joe says the color chips say 50 is darker than 2150. Guy Fay says 2150 is more reflective of light, which would also probably make 2150 lighter--I don't know, but I don't particularly care for the orange tint on the cast with 2150 although it "seems" to get more red with time. Some people say sunlight brings out the true color after a couple of weeks. I would like to go back to 1950 and then 1958 for a couple of days and look around, as I don't know the answer.
