I am planning on restoring my 1950 Oliver 88 for my FFA chapter. When the Oliver's came out, the smaller muffler was often replaced with a larger one. They have cut the hood to make the muffler work. Should I just cut a perfectly round hole and make the cut even? Any suggestions on what I should do is appreciated!!

FD,
You can make a patch panel for your hood. Clean up your hood by cutting a square hole.Get a piece of sheet metal that is slightly thinner than that of the hood.Use a hole saw of the desired dia. to cut a hole in the center of your patch piece.Fit the hood to the tractor, make sure that your exhaust is in place. Slide the patch panel down over the exhaust pipe, using the hood for a template bend the patch panel to match the radius of the hood.Make sure that the exhaust is centered in the hole of the patch panel. Use a marker to mark the patch panel, you want the panel about 1/2 inch bigger than the square hole that you cut in the hood. Cut the patch panel to size. To make a neat job you will have to get a crimping or step tool to make a small step in your panel. The idea is that when you are done that the panel fits into the hole in the hood and is flush with it. Use a mig welder to tack it into place, a little bondo as required and you should be good to go.

If this is for your FFA project and sounds like its to complicated, I would be happy to make you a patch panel.

Just my 2 cents worth

During the summer, it is my pulling tractor. It only needs minor things, and I think that me and the other four guys could get it done, since they have all painted tractors, and pull them with me. Thanks for the advice guys!

I would just cut it out perfectly round and try to make it look the best.
