First of all my Farmall A turns out to be an Industrial Tractor. It is red but was once yellow under the red paint, was the original color of the Industrial Tractors yellow? I am overhauling the engine and want to Paint how do I get started. I want to Primer the engine or something as soon as the engine is back in the Tractor, then move to other parts of the Tractor.

International A's could be any color. Most were probably yellow, but the color would be determined by whoever bought them. Many were the usual IH red and were used on farms. There is a lot of info on paint prep and application in the archives on this forum. The best primer for bare metal is an epoxy primer, these usually have a short 1 to 3 day window, after which they either have to be coated with another primer, or topcoated. Otherwise you have to sand and reapply. If the tractor is outside, I don't believe the primers will help you much as most aren't waterproof. My preference is to coat the bare metal with a rust preventative such as Picklex 20 (there are others), and let it sit inside until I am ready to paint. I have let tractors sit for several months with nothing but rust preventative, with no apparant problems, but I live in a dry climate. Wouldn't try that in Florida, for example.
