Does anyone have any thoughts about using Sherman Williams Ultrafill Primer/Surfacer. I'm used to epoxy primers but this stuff dries so much faster and is easier to sand. Is it ok to put body filler over it? Shouldn't it be sealed before topcoating?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Put an epoxy primer under it, then sand and reapply the surfacer until you are satisfied. Most epoxy primers are fast drying, but are not meant to be sanded. You will have a more durable finish if you use epoxy before surfacer. If you are painting over an old finish, the epoxy seals it, you should not need to seal the surfacer if you are using a compatible Sherwin Williams topcoat. Pick a system from a single manufacturer and follow the instructions for the system.

Forgot your other question -- I apply body filler to properly prepared bare metal (read the can). Some people apply it over epoxy. Don't apply it over surfacer. Get the body filler smooth, use putty to fill the pin holes, then apply surfacer.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I do have a good epoxy primer that I like to use. It's the S/W DTM E2A933 and it sticks to anything but it takes 24 hrs before it can be sanded at all. If I can put the primer surfacer on top of it after an hour or so and then continue on, that would be good. I really like the results I get when I sand it with a soft hand pad.

PPG MP 170 epoxy primer cures in about 30 minutes. You can put surfacer on as soon as it flashes, about 5-10 min. You should wait at least overnight before sanding the surfacer, but it can be done sooner.

I'll check it out. The problem for me with PPG is that my local dealer is pretty bad.

Good dealers are hard to find -- I think I have gained enough knowledge from this board and other sources, that all I use a dealer for is to buy the paint, I won't ask the dealer for advice or recommendations. Next time I have a large project I'm thinking about using mail order, probably cheaper even with the hazardous shipping fees, as I'm currently getting ripped off. Another good place to ask questions is www.paintucation.com -- a lot of serious hobbiests on that board and the moderator is a professional painter -- the board is oriented toward PPG products, however.

I've been using Magnet paint. If I have any questions, I can ask the man who actually formulates the paint. He's always been great to me.
