Hey guys,

I am fixing the hood on a JD MT...near the exhaust pipe it was rusted real back and I had someone cut out the bad spot and re-weld the same heavy gauge steel back in place...the part that was cut-out was 1/2 of the cirle where the exhaust pipe stick through...since that is a REAL HOT area, can you apply bondo here to smooth out the rough spots, then prime and paint?

If the heat destroyed the metal over time, what will it do to bondo? Or, this there a more appropriate material that is great for finishing work and heat resistant, yet holds paint real well?

You you very much for your opinion,
tom

I can't answer your question, but what I do when I have some question about bondo, i.e., not durable enough, too thick, etc, is to use JB Weld. I fact I did a fix similar to yours on my Farmall Super H. The stuff is hard to sand, but you aren't talking about a very large area. As to the bondo, as long as the exhaust pipe is not in direct contact with the metal, I would think it would be ok. In fact, I think you would burn the paint off first. I used a very thin coat of bondo on top of the JB Weld on my tractor. However, although I have confidence in what I did, I won't guarantee anything, since I have not yet started the tractor. However, I don't expect any problems on mine.

Don't use plain bondo, use marglass its alot tougher then regular body filler and wont crack. The stuff can be purchased from a autobody or parts store. It dries rock hard so try to smooth it out well before you let it dry.

I use a product called all metal that works great in this application . It is a 2 part like bondo and applies similar.I believe its made by USC or something like that.I can get that info if you want.A good paint supplier should know what it is though just by asking for " all metal ".
