I have a hood that is stripped down to bare metal and it has a couple spots that need some filler. Should I apply the filler before or after the hood has been sprayed with primer?

Thanks for the help.

John

Hi John,

I suppose it depends on the primer and the adhesion properties of it. I always use an epoxy primer on bare metal and prefer to do any filler work after applying that primer. Others have done it successfully the other way around though.

John,
I am a paint rep for PPG Automotive Refinish, and Rod is right. If you put down an epoxy primer first, you can apply the filler over the top of it AFTER you have scuffed the primer. The preferred method is to do your filler work first, then prime the only bare metal with an acid primer, then primer everything with a primer surfacer. If you have more questions, please email me. Hope this helps.
