LYE IS MEAN!!! Think about it, It is a form of caustic, and it takes an acid to counteract caustics. The best place I have found for washing soda, was in the Laundry section of a Kroger store, they had plenty of it. Gene Davis

Washing soda, calcium carbonate is Borax I believe, used it when I did some taxidermying as a kid. Found under the Borax name in laundry. Looks like laundry detergent, sort of coarse powder stuff.

You'll find Red Devil Lye next to the drain-o. Red Devil brand stuff is pure lye, you'll see sodium hydroxide listed as the only ingredient. Comes crystalized. Drain-o (however you spell it!) isn't.

Sodium Bicarbonate (baking powder) is quite different for everything I've used it for.

Borax isn't going to work because I too was looking today . I called the 800 number at Borax & the lady said that Borax is a natural product taken from the soil in I believe Mexico . She said to find Arm & Hammer Washing Soda or Powder .Red Devil Lye is right beside Drano in the grocery stores . Be careful , wear protection ( and I don't mean condoms ). Ken

Calcium Carbonate (caliche)-- one use is for surfacing roads or use as a base for paving. Very insoluble. Washing soda is sodium carbonate. Borax is sodium borate.

Wups! Thanks. Quick question, I notice Arm and Hammer laundry detergent says it contains sodium carbonate, is it much different than their washing soda for these purposes?

Arm & Hammer makes it. I found it in the laundry section of the supermarket.

Won't a product such as Arm and Hammer baking soda work (sodium bicarbonate)? Washing soda is sodium carbonate, a little less common, but I bet Walmart has it. Lye is sodium hydroxide, a much more caustic chemical, the main ingredient in most brands of oven cleaner.

baking soda is not as (basic or acidic) which ever one it is. washing soda is found in the laundry section.
