I have finished all my work and am ready to prim/paint. I ahve some areas with filler, some with original paint, and some areas to bare metal. Now I was thinking based on what I have learned- epoxy primer, primer surfacer, topcoat. If this is the best way, how much does the epoxy have to be sanded?

Hi Mike,

I think that's the best way to proceed. The epoxy does not have to be sanded at all. The surfacer is the one to get sanded, usually with something like 400 grit before your topcoat.

The epoxy, in addition to being an excellent bare metal primer, also makes an excellent sealer for the old paint and provides a uniformly colored surface for the topcoat.

Just remember to rough up everything prior to the epoxy with, for example, 180 grit and use a special purpose cleaner such PPG DX330 before and after this prep-sanding.

Make sure you follow the time constraints for overcoating the epoxy. You can forget the surfacer on cast surfaces and go direct to your topcoat.
