I am still shopping for the right machine to restore. I am planning to get something like a 720 Deere or the like to parts/decals shouldn't be bad and mechanically I have help. I also have some older implements I want to make look nice.

Painting, I really want to do myself but after reading here I realize how little I know and I don't even want to embarrass myself by asking 20 common knowlege questions.

What would be your guys advice for video or books for the newbie to get me up to speed on terminology, equipment required, etc.

The best way is to do your first paint job on something small, like a riding mower or a small lawn tractor that has a few small dents in it and needs a paint job. A small project for your first one is a good confidence builder and lets you get the feel of how to use the different tools. Then go out and get some body hammers, sanding blocks and sandpaper and have a blast.

As far as learning materials about painting and paint guns, check with the local colleges, alot of the time they have classes to offer or used books for sale.

Get a job in an auto paint & body shop, work there for 6 years, learn everything about body/paint work, then go get a better job in anything else, and pay somebody to paint your tractor! RJ

No thanks, I find it much more rewarding to do the work myself even if it isn't 100% perfect. Besides, I was looking to complete this in the next couple years.

Anyone have any advice that might be a bit more helpful?

Read this site, it has a lot of answers to questions. Also go to autobody101.com, they have a 60 plus page downloadable instruction manual for all to do with painting for free. Now that I think of it that free manual may be on repairnation.com, not sure great priceless manual by a very experienced painter.

Paul, I did my very first paint job this spring on my 52 Farmall Super C. I was scared to death I was gonna mess the thing up, but no problems. Read this board and PRACTICE PAINTING some scrap metal or lumber or side of a barn or something to get the feel of it. I was really proud of how my project turned out. I learned alot in the process and am ready to tackle my newly-acquired Cub.

Good luck!

Paul, get an old piece of equipment, and see if you can spare the time and effort it takes just to clean it up for painting, and go from there. alvinnms
