I would like to get a hvlp gun if it would do as good as job as my cheap siphon. I have been looking at the DeVilibiss Finishline guns on ebay. Does anybody recommend these. Which one? What is the best tip to use for ppg MTK paint. On my paint instructions it says to use a 1.5 tip. Some of these guns have tip sizes like 1.4 or 1.6. I use the same tip in all my painting with my siphon gun. I think it might be 1.8. If I get a hvlp gun I want to make sure I get the right tips for my jobs.

Thanks

Scott

I'm painting a 1979 Ford Truck and have purchased MTK paint already. It's RED which is a high price paint.
My question is can I put clear coat over that finish after 16 hours and do I have to sand it again before I do it.

Thanks for your help.

Larry

The spec sheet for MTK says 1.4-1.6. I used a 1.3 to replace my 1.5 for the 1st time today and was satisfied with it. The pattern for a 1.3 is a little smaller, which is good for tractors since it is difficult to prevent overspray from getting on the fresh paint on the curved surfaces. The smaller the tip, the slower you have to move the gun since you are putting on less paint. 1.8 is way too big for most topcoats, and even some primers, definitely too big for MTK. I haven't used the Finishline guns, but have heard good reports. Get the Finishline III because it has a metal instead of a plastic tip. The inexpensive guns such as the Finishline are ok initially but may not be suited for heavy use because of lighter construction.

Scott,
Using HVLP guns is a great way to use less product and create less overspray. There is a learning curve to using HVLP vs. conventional guns, so I would recommend practicing on something less critical first. MTK is an acrylic urethane, similiar to DCC (Concept) in the PPG Deltron line. A 1.5 is ok, but I would prefer using a 1.4, as it will atomize the paint better, thus giving better results. If you can spend a little extra, the Devilbiss GTI Millinium is an excellent gun, and for awhile they were offering a kit with 3 different size tips. It was a great buy, as I think they go for 350-400. Hope this helps.

Dare,

Could you explain the difference between MTK and DCC paint. I have always used Dupont paint in the past but can no longer buy it locally. I used MTK on a tractor last week. This was my first time using it. It turned out perfect. Clear coat really looks nice. As good as the MTK turned out what makes the DCC that much better that it is so much more money?

Thanks

Scott
